Shoulder Arthroscopy
What is Shoulder Arthroscopy?
Shoulder arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that allows surgeons to diagnose and treat a variety of shoulder conditions. It involves inserting a small camera, called an arthroscope, and specialized surgical instruments into the shoulder joint through tiny incisions. This allows the surgeon to visualize the inside of the shoulder on a monitor and perform necessary repairs without the need for a large, open incision.
When is Surgery Necessary?
Shoulder arthroscopy may be recommended for:
Rotator cuff tears: Repairing torn tendons that stabilize the shoulder.
Labral tears: Repairing tears in the cartilage that lines the shoulder socket.
Shoulder impingement: Removing bone spurs or inflamed tissue that are causing pain.
Shoulder instability: Repairing ligaments that are causing the shoulder to dislocate.
Biceps tendon tears: Repairing or releasing a torn biceps tendon.
Arthritis: Removing loose cartilage or bone spurs.
Frozen shoulder: Releasing tight tissue that is limiting shoulder movement.
Diagnostic purposes: When imaging tests are inconclusive.
What happens during the procedure?
Anesthesia: General or regional anesthesia is used.
Incisions: Several small incisions are made around the shoulder.
Arthroscopy: The arthroscope is inserted to visualize the joint.
Diagnosis & Treatment: Surgical instruments are used to repair or remove damaged tissue.
Closure: The incisions are closed with stitches or adhesive strips.
Recovery
Hospital Stay: Often an outpatient procedure, or a short overnight stay.
Sling: A sling is used for several weeks.
Physical Therapy: Rehabilitation is vital for restoring strength and range of motion.
Activity Restrictions: Certain activities are limited during healing.
