Reconstruction of Foot and Ankle Ligaments

What is Reconstruction of Foot and Ankle Ligaments?

Reconstruction of foot and ankle ligaments is a surgical procedure to repair or replace torn or damaged ligaments that stabilize the ankle and foot joints. Ligaments are strong bands of tissue that connect bones to each other, providing stability. When they are torn, the joint can become unstable, leading to pain, swelling, and recurrent sprains.

When is Surgery Necessary?

Surgery may be necessary when:

Chronic Ankle Instability: When recurrent ankle sprains and instability persist despite conservative treatments (physical therapy, bracing, etc.).
Severe Ligament Tears: When imaging studies confirm significant ligament damage that is unlikely to heal without surgery.
Failed Conservative Treatment: When non-surgical treatments have not provided adequate relief from pain and instability.
Combined Injuries: When ligament tears are accompanied by other injuries, such as fractures or cartilage damage.

Surgical Procedure

Anesthesia: Regional or general anesthesia is used.
Incision: An incision is made over the affected ligaments.
Ligament Repair/Reconstruction: The torn ligaments are repaired or reconstructed using sutures or grafts.
Fixation: If necessary, anchors or screws are used to secure the ligaments.
Closure: The incision is closed with stitches or staples.

Types of Ligament Reconstruction

Ankle Lateral Ligament Reconstruction (Brostrom Procedure or Modified Brostrom): Repair or reinforcement of the ligaments on the outside of the ankle.
Deltoid Ligament Reconstruction: Repair or reconstruction of the ligaments on the inside of the ankle.
Ligament Reconstruction with Grafting: Using a tendon graft (either from the patient or a donor) to replace a severely damaged ligament.

Recovery

Immobilization: A cast, boot, or brace is typically worn for several weeks.
Physical Therapy: Rehabilitation is crucial for regaining ankle strength, stability, and range of motion.
Pain Management: Pain medication is prescribed as needed.
Activity Restrictions: Certain activities are restricted for several months.
