Foot and Ankle Fusion (Arthrodesis)
What is Foot and Ankle Fusion (Arthrodesis)?
Foot and ankle fusion, also known as arthrodesis, is a surgical procedure that involves fusing two or more bones together to eliminate movement at a joint. This procedure is performed to relieve pain and improve stability in severely damaged joints. While it eliminates movement, it can significantly reduce pain and improve function.
When is Surgery Necessary?
Fusion may be necessary when:
Severe Arthritis: When arthritis has caused significant joint damage and pain that cannot be managed with other treatments.
Post-Traumatic Arthritis: After a severe injury or fracture that damaged the joint.
Joint Instability: When ligaments are severely damaged, causing chronic instability.
Deformity Correction: To correct severe deformities of the foot or ankle.
Failed Joint Replacement: In some cases, after a failed joint replacement surgery.
Neuromuscular Conditions: To stabilize joints affected by neuromuscular disorders.
Types of Ligament Reconstruction
Ankle Fusion: Fusing the tibia and talus bones.
Subtalar Fusion: Fusing the talus and calcaneus bones.
Triple Arthrodesis: Fusing the subtalar, talonavicular, and calcaneocuboid joints.
Midfoot Fusions: Fusing bones in the midfoot region.
Toe Fusions: Fusing joints within the toes.
Surgical Procedure
Anesthesia: Regional or general anesthesia is used.
Incision: An incision is made over the affected joint.
Joint Preparation: The cartilage is removed from the joint surfaces.
Bone Grafting: Bone graft (from the patient or a donor) may be used to enhance fusion.
Fixation: Screws, plates, or rods are used to hold the bones together.
Closure: The incision is closed with stitches or staples.
Recovery
Immobilization: A cast or boot is typically worn for several weeks or months.
Physical Therapy: Rehabilitation is crucial for regaining strength and mobility.
Pain Management: Pain medication is prescribed as needed.
Activity Restrictions: Certain activities are restricted for several months.
