Achilles Tendon Repair

Achilles Tendon Repair Operative Technique

What is Achilles Tendon Repair?

A surgical procedure to repair a ruptured (torn) Achilles tendon. The Achilles tendon is a strong, thick tendon that connects the calf muscles to the heel bone.

When is Surgery Necessary?

Complete Rupture: When the Achilles tendon is completely torn, surgical repair is often recommended for optimal healing and return to function, especially in active individuals.
Significant Partial Rupture: In some cases of significant partial tears, surgery may be considered.

Surgical Procedure

Open Repair: The most common approach.
Incision: An incision is made on the back of the ankle.
Repair: The surgeon carefully repairs the torn ends of the tendon using strong sutures.
Reinforcement: The repair may be reinforced with additional techniques, such as using a small piece of tendon or synthetic material to support the healing process.

Recovery

Immobilization: The foot and ankle will be immobilized with a cast or brace for several weeks.
Physical Therapy: Extensive physical therapy is crucial for regaining strength, flexibility, and range of motion. This may involve gradual weight-bearing, stretching exercises, and strengthening exercises.
Return to Activity: A gradual return to normal activities and sports is recommended, with full recovery often taking several months.
