Carpal Tunnel Release

What is Carpal Tunnel Release?

Carpal Tunnel Release is a surgical procedure to relieve pressure on the median nerve, which runs through a narrow passageway in your wrist called the carpal tunnel.

When is Surgery Necessary?

Severe Symptoms: When conservative treatments (wrist splints, medications, physical therapy) fail to provide adequate relief from persistent and worsening carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms.

Symptoms: These may include:

  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and sometimes the ring finger.
      • Pain that may radiate up the arm.
      • Difficulty with fine motor skills (buttoning, gripping).
  • Atrophy of hand muscles in severe cases.

Surgical Procedure

Open Carpal Tunnel Release:

  • A small incision is made in the palm of the hand.
  • The ligament (transverse carpal ligament) that forms the roof of the carpal tunnel is cut, relieving pressure on the median nerve.

Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Release:

  • A smaller incision is made in the palm.
  • A tiny camera (endoscope) and specialized tools are inserted to visualize and release the ligament.

Recovery

  • Immobilization: The wrist may be immobilized with a splint or brace for a short period.
  • Physical Therapy: Physical therapy may be recommended to improve range of motion, strength, and function.
  • Return to Activity: Gradual return to normal activities is usually recommended.

Important Considerations

  • Minimally Invasive: Endoscopic carpal tunnel release generally results in less pain, scarring, and faster recovery than open surgery.
  • Success Rates: Carpal tunnel release surgery is generally successful in relieving symptoms and improving function.
