Chondroplasty

What is Chondroplasty?

  • Chondroplasty is a surgical procedure to smooth and reshape damaged cartilage within a joint, most commonly the knee.
  • Cartilage is the smooth, slippery tissue that covers the ends of bones, allowing them to move easily within a joint.

When is Surgery Necessary?

  • Damaged Cartilage: When cartilage within a joint becomes damaged or roughened due to:
    • Osteoarthritis: Degenerative joint disease.
    • Injury: Such as a sports injury or trauma.
    • Other conditions: Such as chondromalacia (softening of the cartilage).
  • Symptoms: When these conditions cause:
    • Pain
    • Stiffness
    • Limited range of motion
    • Swelling

Surgical Procedure

  • Arthroscopic Technique: Chondroplasty is typically performed arthroscopically, using small incisions and a tiny camera (arthroscope) to visualize the inside of the joint.
  • Smoothing and Reshaping: The surgeon uses specialized instruments to:
    • Smooth: Remove rough, damaged areas of cartilage.
    • Reshape: Contour the cartilage surface to improve joint function.
  • Remove loose fragments: Remove any loose pieces of cartilage within the joint.

Recovery

  • Short Hospital Stay: Usually an outpatient procedure, but may require a short hospital stay.
  • Immobilization: The joint may be immobilized with a brace or splint for a short period.
  • Physical Therapy: Physical therapy is crucial for regaining strength, flexibility, and range of motion.
  • Return to Activity: Gradual return to normal activities is recommended, with full recovery typically taking several weeks or months.

Important Considerations

  • Minimally Invasive: Arthroscopic techniques lead to less pain, scarring, and faster recovery compared to open surgery.
  • Success Rates: Success rates vary depending on the extent of the cartilage damage and individual factors.

Not a Cure: Chondroplasty may provide some pain relief and improve function, but it does not regenerate new cartilage.
